Understand the various ASQ Certifications

CMQ/OE Certified Manager of Quality / Organizational Excellence  

What they do
Facilitates and leads team efforts to establish and monitor customer/supplier relations, supports strategic planning and deployment initiatives.  This person is active in the establishment and maintenance of part or all of quality systems. 
Experience needed
Ten years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge (Leadership, Management, Strategic Planning and Deployment, Project Management, Quality Systems, Quality Tools, Customer Management or Supplier Management and Development). A minimum of five years of this experience must be in a decision-making position. A decision making position does not mean a manager or supervisor.  Four years of experience can be substituted with a four year degree.

What ASQ Certification could come next?

Typically after the CMQ/OE you may pursue the CQE of the sigma belts for a technical side to your alreaday managerial certificaiton.


CQT Certified Quality Technician 
What they do
Develop and maintain inspection and sampling plans along with calibration activities.  Utilize problem solving techniques to improve processes.  Develops various procedures and conducts audits of the quality system.

Experience needed
Four years of higher education or work experience in the quality profession.  Four years of experience can be substituted with a four year degree. 

What ASQ Certification could come next?

Typically after the CQT you would pursue the CQA or the CQE


CQA Certified Quality Auditor 
What they do
Reviews and analyzes all aspects of a quality system and determines its level of compliance to the criteria of various  management and quality evaluation and control systems.

Experience needed
Eight years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the CQA Body of Knowledge (Auditor Competencies, Auditor Skills, Audit Preparation, Audit Performance, Audit Reporting, Audit Follow Up or Quality Tools.   A minimum of three years of this experience must be in a decision-making position.  A decision making position does not mean a manager or supervisor.  Four years of experience can be substituted with a four year degree. 

What ASQ Certification could come next?

Typically after the CQA you would pursue the CMQ/OE.


CQE Certified Quality Engineer 
What they do
Develop and maintain quality systems. Utilize various quality tools and statistical tools to evaluate and improve various quality processes. 

Experience needed
Eight years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the CQE Body of Knowledge (Quality Systems, Management and Leadership, Product and Process Design, Metrology, Sampling, Quality Tools or  Statistical Techniques). Four years of experience can be substituted with a four year degree.

What ASQ Certification could come next?

Typically after the CQE you would pursue the CMQ/OE if you were looking managerial or you could move the CSSGB and CSSBB or the CRE.


CRE Certified Reliability Engineer 
What they do
Utilizes the various analytical techniques to improve product safety, reliability and/or performance.

Experience needed
Eight years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the CRE Body of Knowledge (Reliability Management, Reliability Program Management, Probability and Statistics for Reliability, Reliability Design and Development, Reliability Modeling, Reliability Testing, Maintaining and Availability or Data Collection).  Four years of experience can be substituted with a four year degree. 


CSSBB Certified Six Sigma Black Belt 
What they do
Understands the six sigma methodology and leads efforts to realize savings using six sigma techniques.  Provides leadership for six sigma teams.

Experience needed
Two completed projects with signed affidavits, or one completed project with signed affidavit and three years of work experience in one or more areas of the CSSBB Body of Knowledge (Organization wide planning and deployment, Organizational measures, Team Management, Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) . You do NOT need to be a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt. 


CSSGB Certified Six Sigma Green Belt 
What they do
Supports a black belt and a six sigma team by analyzing data and using problem solving techniques consistent with the DMAIC model.

Experience needed
Three years of work experience in one or more areas of the  CSSGB Body of Knowledge (Six Sigma and the Organization, Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). This certification is NOT a requirement for Six Sigma Black Belt Certification.
